Literature Review:

Reading forms part of the Early Learning Framework and is defined as a mode of communication. There is a close link to the Australian curriculum in that it is clear in both frameworks that there are different strategies required to competently teach reading and writing. In early years, shared reading has been an experience between the child, their parents/ carers or family members, making the experience a social
interaction linked closely to cultural views and experiences. It’s an approach that provides support, scaffolding and a visual to children on how we read, why we read and what we can learn from what we have read (Fellowes, J., & Oakley, G. 2014. pp. 271-293). Guided reading is a skill that has progressed and developed from shared reading with the readers becoming gradually independent and equipped with skills
that will support them in being able to transfer their thoughts, ideas and words onto paper. This is a crucial building block for children to activate; it is developed in their reading skills, by expanding their ideas, imagination and ability to display emotions that are linked to their learning journey. As stated by Fellows, “phonological awareness is a very important understanding for student’s to gain, without it, reading
and writing progression is restricted” (Fellows, 2014). This assessment will evaluate shared and guided reading as well as modelled and independent writing.
