Each student is required to complete a descriptive research report, in APA format. The
topic for the Lesson 10 Assignment is the impact of fire on ordinary type building
construction. Please review the Chapter 10 Case Study found on page #251 of the
course textbook and review the NIOSH Report for the Chicago Abandoned Commercial
Structure Fire.
Complete a research paper focused on the Chicago Abandoned Commercial Structure
Fire Case Study. Your research paper should include a discussion of the following:
• Identify the construction characteristics of ordinary type construction.
o How do these characteristics relate to the case study?
• Describe the construction characteristics of bowstring type truss roofs.
• Discuss the unique challenges faced by firefighters while operating in buildings of
ordinary type construction with bowstring truss roofs.
• Finally, the research paper should include a recommendation for reducing risk to
firefighters when operating at fires in these types of buildings.
The research paper shall be a minimum of one page and a maximum of two pages, not
including the title page and reference page. The reference page should include at least
one reference, which may be your course textbook.
