* IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU READ THE ENTIRE QUESTION, AS EACH MAY HAVE SEVERAL SUB-QUESTIONS.*
1. YOUR FAVORITE MASS MEDIUM
Choosing from: television, internet, books, newspapers/news media, movies, recorded music or radio, discuss your personal favorite mass medium.
> Explain at least one significant way it impacted both you and society: meaning both the country in general AND you personally. How has it changed you over the course of your life, or how would your life be different without it?
2. POLARIZED MEDIA
We discussed the polarization of the mass media, internet, news media and how it relates to the rise of right-wing radio.
> First, referring to our lectures, explain at least two key reasons why this has happened – how/why we became so polarized and divided in terms of the news media we use.
> Cite one example of a news personality (living or dead) who contributed to these divisions, and why you think this person has appeal.
> Please find a link to a clip of whatever person you cite (youtube etc) and quote from the clip.
3. SFC 1920 WILDERNESS LODGE (this looks long, but it’s pretty easy. Read the entire question before you answer!)
Here is a thought experiment: SFC builds a new gorgeous campus, a beautiful lodge in Hawaii that provides luxury living and learning. Think of it like resort living with free college classes. BUT it will seem like you landed in 1920; this island is isolated!
> The only mass media are the old types: books, newspapers and local radio. The campus does have music: vinyl records from the 1930s and before, pianos and many other acoustic instruments. But that’s all.
> There is no TV, no internet, no movies. Don’t bother trying to sneak in a smart phone, there is no cell phone access. You cannot bring any new mass media technology; just books, paper and pens – to take notes and write (real) letters.
> Good news – it’s 100% free. SFC students will get top-quality room and board – every single expense is paid. The meals are prepared by chefs and bakers, and every student has access to a fully stocked kitchen.
> Sports and outdoor activities are free, and accessible: hike, swim, canoe, boat, snorkel or just wade in the ocean; a soccer field, baseball diamond, basketball – you name it. All the equipment is provided for and medical care is free. But of course no cable TV of internet to watch games.
> Semesters are short: four weeks (instead of fifteen). But remember, you are more or less in the wilderness for a month. You won’t know what’s “trending” or be able to stream anything. No youtube, no instagram, no internet.
Here is the question: Would you choose the nature campus experience, or not? Why? Be specific, especially in terms of the lack of technology. Could you live without the technology or not? What do you think you would miss the most and how do you think your life might improve? What would you do with your time if you chose the Hawaii campus?
