During my clinical rotation I have encountered in a female patient is depression. There have been many patients in the office that I have seen display many concerns for being depressed. having a good rapport with your patients, makes it easier for them to open up to the idea of being honest and truthful. The problem with helping patients with depression and mental health disorders is often a coverage problem. The WHO focuses on four main categories in their comprehensive mental health action plan that can help patients gain coverage who are high risk. The original four major objectives remain unchanged: more effective leadership and governance for mental health; the provision of comprehensive, integrated mental health and social care services in community-based settings; implementation of strategies for promotion and prevention; and strengthened information systems, evidence and research (World Health Organization, 2021). Another strategy for change can be increasing the providers that accept certain coverage, as this provides a hinderance in patients getting the help they need in a timely fashion. This is a big problem and I know of it personally as it has affected family members closest to me. The main problem was that providers didn’t accept the insurance, or they were too expensive. As a family practice provider, we will find ourselves treating depression in the primary care setting. Placing patients on an anti-depressant requires a follow up to ensure the patient is not having mood changes, suicidal ideation, or need for increased dosages. All patients react differently to anti-depressants, so it is imperative to ensure the patient is getting a benefit to the new medication and not hindering their quality of life.
