In the previous lesson, you analyzed an existing infographic for its effectiveness. For this assignment, you will create your own infographic that takes into consideration design principles and the ethical use of graphics to convey data. In order to create your project, you will need to create an account with the online infographic creation website Piktochart.com. Piktochart has ready to use infographic templates that make it (relatively) easy to display data in eye-catching formats and tell a story about a particular topic. Make sure to watch the video tutorial that gives you a brief overview of how to navigate that website.
The subject of your infographic will be a social issue that you can highlight along with potential solutions. You need to include a description of the problem/issue and a section that addresses ways your audience can act to solve this problem. You will need to find information about the issue through online research. Utilize the library databases as well as Google to compile data, trends, and general information about your topic. A good practice when dealing with data is to crosscheck your sources. As you find statistics on your topic, make sure that multiple reputable sources agree on the information. We do not want to disseminate propaganda, misleading statistics, or patently false data. Make sure you save the sources you use because those must be included at the bottom of your infographic.
Topic Selection
Some examples to give you an idea of what a topic could look like:
The rise of textbook costs and potential ways to reduce those costs in the future.
The pros and cons of various cellular service providers and how an individual can choose between the options.
The problem of identity theft/hacking and how to keep your personal information secure online.
Please keep in mind that your infographic doesn’t need to solve world hunger. We often gravitate toward “big” and “important” topics, but think about all the issues (big and small) that influence people. Consider the many life decisions (big and small) people make daily.
Of course, I am not expecting you to become an expert on an issue in such a short period of time. This means you should choose a topic that you generally understand and with which you have prior facility. This will aid in the researching phase because you will likely know what kind of data to look for. However, allow yourself to discover new information and consider multiple viewpoints—even if they conflict with your preconceived ideas about the issue. Your own understanding of the issue should grow and evolve as you research.
Assessment Criteria
I will ask these questions as I evaluate your document:
Does the infographic identify and explain a problem relevant to a particular audience?
Does the infographic provide a section on solutions or ways your reader can act in light of the problem?
Does the infographic primarily rely on visual displays of information and minimize the use of text? Do the necessary uses of text adhere to Standard Written English?
Does the infographic utilize the CRAP principles and other design and typography standards to organize information (spacing, alignment, color choices, font choices, etc.)?
Does the infographic contain at least three (3) charts or graphs that visualize data associated with the issue? Are these charts effective, logical, and ethical in their representation of the data?
