Learning Goal: I’m working on a other writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.1. Read the article “Kids and community violence”. This is an article published in a media outlet written for the general public, and can give you a general overview of the academic study it references. Then, read the academic article “Children’s Cognitive Performance and Selective Attention Following Recent Community Violence”. As I discuss in the writing lecture, when looking for the main summary of an argument- you should be focusing on the introduction and the discussion. When looking to critically evaluate the validity and generalizability of an article, you need to focus on the methods. Make sure to pay close attention to those sections as you read.2. Critically Think Once you have read (but before you begin to write!!) think about the answers to the following questions:- Do you agree with these findings? Do you think the type of tasks uses in the methods are reliable? Are there any changes you would make to the study?- Given what we have read and your own experiences, do the results of this study make sense to you? What other factors do you think might contribute to the differences in attention observed between children exposed to different levels of violence? -What implications do these findings have for the ways that children develop over time? What implications do they have for particular behaviors-like school performance, etc- that arise later on in life? -What limitations do you see to the results of this study in terms of validity? Were there any important confounds or flaws in conceptualization and how do they shape your evaluation of this study as scientifically sound (or not)?-What limitations do you see to the results of this study in terms of generalizability? Would you expect that if researchers were to perform this same task in another culture or context, that these results would be the same?3. Write and present analysis Once you have answered the above questions for yourself, choose one interesting thought or argument and expand upon it. The above questions can generate many avenues for discussing the results of the academic study, but I don’t want you to address all of them. I want you to choose one of these questions to focus on (or a question of your own, as long as it is relevant to the article), and come up with your own argument in response to that question. Then I want you to write an essay supporting your argument with evidence. You can use evidence from the article as well as other academic/scientific sources to support your argument- make sure you are supporting your article with evidence! (Opinions don’t count here). Again, refer to the guidelines for more details.
