The law, if enacted, would expand existing federal anti-discrimination law to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. As reported by NPR, President Biden heartily supports this legislation: “I urge Congress to swiftly pass this historic legislation,” he wrote. “Every person should be treated with dignity and respect, and this bill represents a critical step toward ensuring that America lives up to our foundational values of equality and freedom for all.”
Drawing on the lecture by Dean Spade and the two chapters written by him (included in the module) and the actual text of the bill https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/5/text (Links to an external site.), discuss how Spade might assess the ability of the Equality Act to protect transgender people of color who are low-income. Provide evidence from his work to support your ideas. Do you agree with Spade? Biden? What might Villamoare (article in module) say in response to Spade? What might the people profiled in the film Stonewall Uprising say about the Equality Act? What does your response say about the power of law to make our society more equitable?
