Learning Goal: I’m working on a business discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.DISCUSSIONS WEEK 2 One of the biggest questions that both scholars and common citizens have debated sunce the founding of our country is whether a large bureaucracy (government) actually fosters or limits democracy. What do you think? Do we need lots of government in order to have the strongest democracy or does “big” government interfere with our democratic ideals? CLASSMATES POST-PLEASE RESPOND LATOYA KILPATRICK On this topic I am on the fence. On one hand I believe that the ideal for creating a bureaucracy was and is very important. I agree with the idea of balacing powers and ensuring that each citizen has a voice that is heard. On theother hand I also believe that having a bureaucracy limits our democracy because of certain beliefs, laws, and equality for all citizens. Make no mistake; I am not referring to race yet civil liberties for all citizens. One way that I beleive that a bureaucracy limints a democracy is the decisions that are made affects every individual in that community; in one way or another. The is also the practice of using intergrity in all situations; regardless if someone is watching or for recognition. In closing my opinion is that having a bureaucracy both hinders and help for our ideals for a democracy. Honestly this is a great topic to debate and toss around ideas. WEEK 3 What is e-government? Back in the 90s, it was predicted that by now we would be doing all of our government interaction (including voting) online. In your opinion why has that happened? CLASSMATES POST-PLEASE RESPOND LATOYA KILPATRICK Electronic government (or e-Government) is the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to government functions and procedures with the purpose of increasing efficiency, transparency and citizen participation. The reason that e-government has become easily accepted is simple; the rise of technology. When I was growing up we still had house phones, computer applications, etc; but with the constant rise and development of technology so much has changed today. In today’s society many tasks are completed online: shopping, doctor’s appointments, speaking with representatives, etc so why not for government issues as well. The way I see things is that the government is looking for ways to be accessible to every citizen so they are taking matters such as: getting replacement idenification, voting, reporting information for data reports and studies, etc as a way to service all citizens. Some more important matters still have to be handled in a more “traditional” matter. In short the reason for e-government is because technology is heavily accepted. WEEK 4 What is the major difference between the private sector of government sector of our economy and government. What public services do you think should definately be supplied by the government and which should be supplied by the private sector? Why? CLASSMATES POST-PLEASE RESPOND LATOYA KILPATRICK The number one distinction that I noticed while doing research on the topic is the ownership of the organizations within them. The government owns and controls organizations in the public sector. Organizations in the private sector, on the other hand, are owned and managed by individuals or private enterprises. Another difference between the two is monetary fluency and the methods that both the private sector and government use. After completing research I learned that some services provided by the government included: mail delivery, school, etc. The private sector services include grocery stores, dry cleaning, etc. I honestly agree with the examples of the services provided by the government and I would like to add grocery stores as well. The reason I want to add grocery services and agree with the other examples is the cost of living is steadily rising around the globe and I believe that adding grocery services could effectively lift some stress from everyone. I guess what I am saying is I believe that the government should be responsible for services that are considered a necessity, and the private sector should provide services for amenities. I do not know how it should be configured what is deemed a necessity or not because everyone’s definition of necessity is different. WEEK 5 What do you think the senior executive service is compatible with democracy? Why or why not? CLASSMATES POST-PLEASE RESPOND LATOYA KILPATRICK Senior executive service is a position I believe that in certain instances the senior executive classification in the civil service of the United States federal government is equivalent to general officer or flag officer rank in the U.S. Armed Forces. One challenge that I faced after graduating with my bachelor’s degree was inexperience. I was frustrated with the companies because I understood their requirements; but how was I going to acquire the experience if no one would take a chance on me. These positions are obtainable but require work and qualifications for the position. I believe the senior executive service is compatible with democracy in some instances and in some they are not. The reason why is because I align with the ideals and principles that are outlined in chapter 9. An example from chapter 9 that I align with is human capital. The reason that I agree is that many examples of human capital such as communication skills, talents, etc. Those are assets that help an individual obtain success. The reason that I said that in instances it is not compatible is the roadblocks and definite issues that occur. One example that the book used is non-strategic plans to help develop talents for people. I do believe that with better planning and initiative on every side the senior executive service can become compatible with democracy.
