The Handmaid’s Tale Literary Criticism Essay
In a 7- to 8-page essay, develop a unique argument about The Handmaid’s Tale related to a specific critical lens of your choosing. Please see the Introduction to Literary Criticism page for a list of critical lenses to choose from.
Critical lens- Feminist Criticism (Links to an external site.) (1960s-present)
Feminist theory can be traced to the theories of Simone de Beauvoir in The Second Sex (1929), though in 1919, Virginia Woolf also formed the foundation of feminist criticism in her seminal work, A Room of One’s Own. Feminist criticism, or gender studies, focuses on the role of women (or gender) in a literary text. According to feminist criticism, patriarchy, in its masculine-focused structure, socially dictates the norms for both men and women. Feminist criticism is useful for analyzing how gender itself is socially constructed for both men and women. Gender studies also considers how literature upholds or challenges those constructions, offering a unique way to approach literature.
Questions to ask:
Consider stereotypical representations of women as the beloved, mothers, virgins, whores, and/or goddesses. Does the text refer to, uphold, or resist any of these stereotypes? How?
What roles have been assigned to the men and women in the text? Are the roles stereotypical? Do gender roles conflict with personal desires?
Does the text paint a picture of gender relations? If so, how would you describe gender relations in the text? On what are they based? What sustains them? What causes conflict between men and women?
Are gender relations in the text celebrated? Denigrated? Mocked? Mystified? If so, how?
This essay will require plenty of independent research on your part to
learn about the specific literary criticism lens you have selected,
research what other critics have said about the same work, and
find supporting evidence for your unique thesis argument.
Unlike Project 3, this essay should not focus on the historical and cultural influences on the novel. Begin by choosing a literary “lens” through which to begin your inquiry. Try to find a 2-3 sources on your selected literary lens specifically to help you develop your argument.
As always, your essay should center around a clear, argumentative thesis statement that addresses the specific critical lens you’ll be focusing on. All arguments and claims should be supported by analysis and evidence/examples from The Handmaid’s Tale in addition to credible supporting texts that you’ll find on your own.
You will need a total of at least seven outside sources (at least four of which should be scholarly peer-reviewed articles found using MSJC’s scholarly article databases), in addition to citing The Handmaid’s Tale. Assume your reader has some familiarity with the novel, so there’s no need to include too much introductory information about the novel or its main characters.
