Diversity Paper with an IPE Component Grading Guidelines
The diversity paper with an IPE component is worth 30% of your grade or 30 points.
This assignment is a 3-4 page paper (not including title page and references page) designed to give students the opportunity to discuss the literature used to understand diversity and how nursing and other health professions are impacted by these issues of diversity. The paper has 2 parts to it:
Part I (15%) : student’s identifies one of the issues raised in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Examples of topics discussed in the book were: 1) medical racism, 2) racism, 3) informed consent, 4) sexism, and 5) other issues identified by the student. Students must write a well-developed analysis of how the issues in the book have improved or remain in the current health care system, what positive and negative changes have occurred since the time of Henrietta Lacks and health care today, how nurse educators/administrators can impact this issue in the current health care system.
Part II (10%): The second part of this paper will require the student to interview a health care provider/student from a discipline other than nursing. During the interview the student will investigate the following
Identify the health discipline the interviewee works in
Discuss the Henrietta Lack’s story with the interviewee and identify if they are aware of her
story and the issues raised in the story. (If the interviewee is not aware of the story the
student should briefly educate the person about her story).
Discuss the issue/topic addressed in Part I of the paper and whether this is an issue in their
discipline and/or how it is demonstrated in their health discipline.
Discuss how this issue has changed or remained the same in their health discipline
Identify strategies or ways that all health providers can collaborate to address this issue in
the current and future health care system to improve upon the issues seen in the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
The paper should use a social justice framework in addressing these topics.
All papers must meet standards for scholarly writing and graduate level work. Your paper should be well written (clarity), have the appropriate type and number of references, if applicable, and meet APA style and formatting standards (5%).
Grading Components (30 points):
This is a 3-4 page paper that incorporates the following components:
