When working on a complicated project with several chains of events, we must study the relationships between each event, keep track of the time required to finish each event, and comprehend the project’s overall workflow model. PERT stands for Program Evaluation Review Technique used in a project management analysis and divides the entire project into multiple events. There are numerous diagramming software packages available in the industry that allow one to create PERT Charts. Some tools are free to use online, while others are not.
Three of the best and most popular are Lucidchart, SmartDraw, and Creately. Lucidchart is an online-based application that helps create Gannt charts, org charts, engineering drawings, professional diagrams, relational diagrams, flowcharts, etc. It allows multiple users to log in to the software from different places, work as a team, and draw, edit, and share the output across other platforms. Since it is a web-based software, there is no need to depend on any third-party upgrades because it automatically upgrades itself with new web forms.
Smartdraw is an all-in-one diagramming tool and one of the most popular alternatives to MS-Visio. Its features include quick-start PERT chart templates, teamwork, and sharing. Diagrams generated from this tool can be exported to any online platform, including Google sheets and docs. Creately is a diagramming tool used to create engineering diagrams, mind maps, organizational charts, industrial diagrams, flowcharts, and more. With thousands of in-built templates, it has an easy-to-use interface with drag-and-drop functionalities and text to shapes, smart shapes, smart connectors, and multiple themes.
PERT and CPM software programs are used in construction projects. CPM allows project managers to assess the earliest and latest times for activities to begin and end, determine float (slack), and establish the critical path. PERT allows project managers to predict the likelihood of finishing the project within the estimated completion time (Karabulut, 2017). PERT and CPM are two traditional operations research approaches that are closely connected. They help the maintenance project manager with their responsibilities. Among their responsibilities is scheduling many activities during shutdown and overhauling because shutdown and overhauling provide a maintenance department with unique opportunities that are not normally available during normal operation and are only available for a short time (Sayre et al., 2022).
