Discussion Question 2

Question 1
The last line in the “Flowers” by Alice walker reads “And the summer was over.” The line represents the end of some activity for Myop. In literature, summer may refer to a period when most of the people within the U.S. and other countries take holidays and rest from their work. Alice Walker may have used the same meaning to imply a vacation or exploration. At the same time, summer may refer to freedom and growth as Myop searches for love, self-acceptance and identity. However, because the story revolves around a young girl Myop, the author may have implied young age and all the traits that come with it, such as innocence and simplicity. Therefore, the end of summer refers to Myop stopping being innocent. She realizes that men are capable of doing all sorts of evil, and consequently, she cannot trust them anymore.
Myop is no longer at ease with going out to the fields to gather flowers as she did before. Initially, she would go to the fields without being worried about any imminent danger. However, today, that freedom and carefree trait come to an end. To make matters worse for her, she has not found flowers to bring home on this day. The brevity of the sentence is significant in building the theme of loss of innocence. It is as short as possible to present the idea that the loss of innocence did not come gradually; instead, it came abruptly from the realization that men are evil. Summer, a period of carefree exploration ends abruptly that even Myop never expected.

Evaluate the sources your peer chose? Are they scholarly, popular, do they seem legitimate enough? What other types of sources will they need to look into according to the prompt? Is their citation entry formatted correctly? (Use the textbook to evaluate.) Do you have any suggestions for the obstacles your peer is facing? What are your thoughts on their questions? How might they strengthen their research argument or topic? Where might they look for additional strong sources for their topic? Offer you peer two specific suggestions: Developing An Argument of Your Own in that might help them to improve their research. This could either be something that speaks specifically to improving or directing their research or because you found it a valuable point in the reading for your own insight into the research process.
