ABS200 INTRODUCTION TO BEHAVIORAL APPLIED SCIENCES

Respond to Peers: , respond to at least two of your classmates ( at least 50 words or more) including at least one who selected a different video than you selected. Ask questions that might help to further your understanding of the discussion or take the discussion to a deeper level. What other theoretical models of career counseling might be useful to explain the observations your classmate made? Did your classmate identify any specific counselor behaviors which you also observed in the behavior of the counselor in the video you watched? Explain.

Career counseling is valuable in all stages of life. From grade school to adulthood, the profession provides the benefits of career development, assistance in job transition, and reentering the workforce. The later is the subject of the video I watched.

The counselor speaks with a middle-aged, African American woman who has been unemployed for four years. The counselor is very attentive and asks open-ended questions. The questions promote self-reflection and assessment, which actively involve the client. The counselor establishes a healthy, trustworthy relation through active listening and refraining from judgment on any answers provided. The use of “we” by the professional was noticeable throughout the video, letting the client know she was not alone. A discussion of goal setting and outcome expectations was noteworthy.

The video was reflective of trait and factor models and Super’s developmental self-concept theory (Mccarthy et al., 2016). All three of Frank Parson’s career development steps are evident – studying individual traits and abilities, surveying the world of work (opportunities), and developing a match between the two. Additionally, one can analyze Holland’s Typology in the video. While the client had artistic hobbies, her work experience is primarily conventional, and her aspirations are social. The clinician asks questions searching for congruence between the client and the work environment. Super’s theory identifies five stages that define vocational maturity by actual age across a lifespan (McCarthy et al., 2016). Our example is at the end of establishment and in the infancy of maintenance. She desires to improve her skills and secure occupation.

There were no noticeably cultural sensitivity issues in the video. A new trend in career counseling, however, involves the application of existential psychotherapy (Links to an external site.) principles in career counseling scenarios involving African American men (Bell, 2018). This humanistic perspective attempts to understand clients phenomenologically, whether the perception is biological, social, or self-motivated. It considers disparities in education, criminal justice, and the “unique experience” of black men in America. Albert Camus (Links to an external site.) was a recognized existentialist associated with absurdism (Links to an external site.). I am intrigued by these studies and excited about such innovative career interventions with Black men. Considering the origins of the philosophy, what does the use of existentialism indicate about attitudes of cognition? Why do you think racial sensitivity is so essential to career counseling?

“Narrowing Down Career Options” is the video of choice for this discussion. During the video the counselor was able to listen to the student’s top three passions and possibility for a career path in sociology. The student was able to explain why he was interested in law, social services, and business. As they spoke about each section of sociology the counselor was able to narrow down what the student seemed to be more excited about talking about as well as passionate. She was able to help him understand that he could still find a job within his most passionate career path and find ways to travel for work.

It was important to see that the student was being heard and understood and guided. The counselor was able to explain that although the student would not be at the level that he wanted to be at immediately but with working towards his goal he will get there step by step.

Holland’s typology ; realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional are known by Holland as “congruence.” Congruence is defined as the amount of overlap between the characteristics of the person and the work environment (McCarthy, 2016. (8.3)). In the video the counselor appeared to be using congruence as she spoke with the student about his career goals.

It is important to have a balance and peace within career and personal issues. “One’s career aspirations, or lack thereof, can directly affect many aspects of life, including future earnings, personal health, and identity” (McCarthy, 2016. (8.6)). This is a valid point as we set out to form a career that will be what we do daily until the day of retirement. Our schedules and career paths will form each of us, or personal life, our social life, our passions and hobbies. To be at peace and happy with what we are doing, the amount that we are making, our daily encounters, and our ability to push to do better and to continue learning will be critical once graduated and searching for jobs.EDU 520 Education and law: assignment help online
