Chapter 21 discusses methods of coping with stress, for adults. As adults we all face and/or deal with stress but we all cope with stress differently. Some coping methods could be destructive like drug abuse, smoking, drinking, or overeating, while others can help us in a healthier way. This chapter presents three cognition methods for coping. The first one is Avoiding Coping; this method is when the person responds to stressors by ignoring the problem or hiding it. This is the worst way to cope because it increases depression and the risk for suicide. The second method is Problem-focused coping, and it is exactly that tackling the problem directly and it could be effective. The third coping method is Emotion-focused coping, is dealing with the stress by changing feelings for example changing your anger to acceptance which helps change the stressor itself.

My dad and I have a unique relationship, or I don’t even know if it is even a relationship. My dad uses the avoiding coping method because he avoids our family get together. I constantly invite him for my kids’ birthday parties, thanksgiving, and any celebration and he says “I’ll be there” but he never shows up. My dad is an alcoholic and I guess my siblings and I try talking to him about his problem but since he doesn’t want to deal with it, he just avoids the family reunions and says that he’ll be there so that we don’t continue to insists or questioned him. It is the worst way to handle a problem because I am sure he must feel lonely at times and he is not only harming himself but also his family.

Problem-focused coping is something that comes easy to some people, not to me. This is a bit hard for me because if I just concentrate on the problem it gives me more stress. Problem focused coping can be effective because usually the person deals with the problem right away. I have done this before, but it could have both positive and negative results. I don’t do this coping method well because I get very confrontational. I am focused on the problem so much that sometimes it builds up and I get very angry and turns out to be more negative than positive. I have learned that being problem focused is not the best way to cope with stress for me. I am sure for others it may work, like the book mentions an example of moving out of a dangerous neighborhood that is taking care of the problem and it is effective.

I have learned that when I am under stress, the best coping method for me is emotion focused. I am the type of person that likes to analyze the problem/stress and I put myself in everyone else’s shoes to try and understand all perspectives. Once, I analyze the problem, my emotions are no longer as important as it may have if I reacted immediately. I think this type of coping helps me control drastic behaviors and actions that sometimes come out of just our emotions. In this method I can change the stressor and focus on a different feeling by thinking and analyzing before reacting. It is not an easy task, because it only has been acquired through experience.

A healthy way for me and effective method to cope with stress is emotion focused. I like the thinking, analyzing, and looking from the different angles before considering if it’s something worth stressing about. I do like to talk about it with my sisters or friends if I think something may be adding stress. It helps me to understand the problem or stress better if I hear how others interpret it. As adults we must learn to deal with stress on a daily basis and knowing how to cope with it helps us be a healthier person mentally, emotionally and physically.

In chapter #21 of our book, they discuss the coping methods used in adulthood which are: avoidant coping, problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. Let’s start by answering what is a coping method? Adults use coping method is used to cope with stress. Not always in a positive way because it can be a destructive one too like drug abuse, obesity, smoking, drinking, eating sweets, etc. Why is important to understand our coping methods? Because how we cope and deal with stress is crucial for our mental health. The 1st coping method is avoidant coping which is to ignore the problem, you forget it or hide it. This one is a negative one because will increase depression and the risk of suicide. The 2nd one is problem-focused coping which is when the person attacks the stressor directly. This one is a positive one because it led you to a solution. The third one is emotion-focused coping which is changing emotional reactions, which makes the stressor disappear and you become stronger and more empathic because of it.

When I’m dealing with a lot of stress, I tend to write down everything, to do a to-do list and to do a list of things that I’m worried so I don’t forget. For some reason, when I have a lot of things in my head, things I’m worried, things I have to do I get afraid that I will forget about them. Writing it down help me organized myself, help me be more relaxed because I will not forget about it and help me accomplish my things. That example that I mentioned above is a problem-solved coping skill. An example of how I use emotion-focused coping definitively is by cleaning my house. It makes me feel better and I can think about the situations that is giving me stress more clearly. By the other side, I sometimes use the avoidant coping, which as we discussed isn’t the healthier one. I tend to go shopping when I’m feeling very stressed. Who doesn’t feel happy by going shopping? I go shopping in order to avoid thinking about the situations (avoiding it) and also because I like how I feel after going to the shopping.

In conclusion, is important we analyze and understand how we deal with stress. Is very important to have a healthy emotion-focused coping skill. Other skills that I use (healthy ones) besides cleaning the house and creating list is gardening my plants at home, listening to music, looking at pictures, taking a bath, putting on lotion and perfume that smells good and taking care of my body and appearance (doing my nails, hair, face mask). There’s a lot of things we can do to feel better. Life is stressful as it is, we have to know to we deal with stress in a healthy way so our mental health is healthy.
