We often say things like:

“She has a good mind;” “I changed my mind;” “she almost lost her mind.’

What is this thing we call the “MIND”?

Both Plato and The French philosopher Rene Descartes, who we will be reading soon, have the view called DUALISM. This view states that the mind is distinct from the body and can exist on its own after the death of the body. This view has some powerful objections – especially, the mind-body interaction problem and the problem of where the mind is located. Why are Descartes’ solutions to the mind body -interaction problem, and the location problem, not good ones? Do you believe in an immaterial mind or soul as Descartes and many religious people believe? If so, how do you solve these problems in your own thinking? If you don’t believe in immaterial minds or souls, and think there are just brains and no souls, what are your reasons for that view??
