Discuss the importance of family and the family unit in the first half of Fences. How do the family members in this play support each other’s dreams, and how do they hold each other back from achieving their dreams? Also consider how traditional family roles are represented: Some of these roles could be literal family positions, like father, mother, child, grandmother, and some of them could be figurative positions, like breadwinner, moral/spiritual leader, housewife, etc. How do the characters in Fences either embrace their roles within the family, or how do they chafe against it? How do the other members of their families reinforce those roles for others? For example, how does Troy in Fences discourage Cory from pursuing his dreams? Why did Troy, who was thwarted from being a professional athlete, not want his son to pursue a promising career in athletics? Keep in mind that Fences is about a marginalized (African-American) family in the U.S, so class structure and a prejudice society must play into why the characters act the way they do.
In addition to answering the above, find a connection between your analysis of the family in Fences with two texts we’ve studied this semester (your choice attached options below). One of the texts you choose to connect to must be fiction, and one text must be a poem. Where do you see similar family dynamics? Where do you see this push and pull, of wanting connection, and yet wanting to be free, at the same time?
