Questions
Several characters in Tartuffe try to “speak truth to power.” Why do they fail? What point do you think Moliere was trying to make?
Elmire, Mariane and Dorine are all strong female characters for the time period, each in her own way. Which one did you think was the strongest? Explain why.
At the end of the play, Cléante tells Orgon to leave Tartuffe alone and hope that the charlatan mends his wicked ways. Do you think Tartuffe will actually change? Why or Why not?
Tartuffe was initially banned by church and state. Do you think it is right to ban/censor works of art? Can a work of art go too far?
Moliere exposes hypocrisy by focusing on the differences between Tartuffe’s words and actions. Can you think of similar examples of hypocrisy in our society today? Why do people behave this way?
