**** 2 CLASSMATE RESPONSES ****
1. After reading Frey’s note to his reader, he explained how it felt to be in his situation and experience the events exactly how he did. In the note to readers, he explained how he exaggerated parts throughout the book he wrote. I understood this as he was describing how it felt to him. A couple of hours to him in jail felt like three months because of his troubles. Frey admitted to exaggerating parts of his story, which could change the readers’ opinion of whether this memoir is true. The memoir is embellished to explain how he felt and remembered his memories. Even though this is true, it should still be considered a true story. Now the question is, can a story be fiction, even though it happened. I believe a story can be fiction even though it happened. The memoir indeed happened; the details that occurred within were exaggerated. Frey said he ingested alcohol every day, every second he was awake. This may not have been true because of the number of drugs he had consumed. He may not have consumed all the drugs he said because he could have been too drunk to remember. At one point or another, he did indeed do all these drugs and ingested the alcohol, maybe not at times, he said.
2. Frey’s approach to the surface – level conventions of writing like his affected me as a reader by sometimes I didn’t know if he was verbally saying what he wrote or if he was thinking it in his mind. I don’t believe I have ever seen writing this way, but I believe he is entitled to write however he feels since it is his thoughts and experiences. The style was out of the norm, but I could understand the approach he was using. Every writer should be able to write however they choose fit as long as it is okay with them. If you are writing for your audience then you should write how you would think your audience would understand.. Frey described how successful his book turned out to be so I believe he succeeded even though there were certain details that are not entirely accurate. The book is regarding a drug addict/alcoholic so some of his experiences are described from someone who is not sober to even remember the exact truth. I feel you can ask 2 different people who seen the exact same thing and they still would not verbalize every exact detail the same way, everyone interprets things in different ways. I feel it is completely normal to for a human to exaggerate, there’s a difference between something being completely false and exaggeration.
