For this week’s discussion I want you to study the picture on page 33 of your Authenticity book. I want you to answer the questions posed in the Collaborate box on page 34. Make sure you post a link to your chosen photograph so everyone can find it and look it over. It’ll make the discussion on findings and discussion on other folks’ photo’s much easier. Don’t forget the 200-200-200 rule. Your 200-word response, and respond to two of your classmates in 200 words.
***CLASSMATE RESPONSE***
1.) I took a different approach on this post. We were told to look for a negative image and at first I planned to post about a girl mourning her sister being killed by a German aircraft, but I found a negative picture that at the time was probably seen as good. I came across a picture taken by what I expected was another soldier, though I could not find a name. The image shows three men posing with nine skulls being held like trophies all around them. I find it negative in two ways. One, being obviously that they’re showcasing deaths of people like they’re animals. Two, that the battles and amount of people the soldiers must have killed, made them lack that much empathy, leading me to understand the damage war can do to a person’s well being. I think it is less emotionally charged than the image in the book. Simply because the smiles on the men in the image I chose, added to the negativity rather than sadness. The picture in the book was a proud, inspiring moment that presented a victory after a consistent amount of fighting. A negative image may hurt to look at, but after seeing the outcome and having the feeling of success, it makes the negative images feel like they weren’t for nothing.

2.) The picture on page 33 of the Authenticity book shows soldier’s lifting up an American Flag showing our country’s victory on the battle field as the stand on bodies that did not survive the attack. The photo I chose shows 5 men that are sitting down hurt after recovering from an attack. The center of the photo is a man that has the look of defeat on his face and his face is dirty. The men around him look very hurt with gauze around their heads and faces as some look down looking at what seems to be food they are eating. One man in the photo is looking at his cigarette he is smoking. The photo can be shown as negative since men have gauze around their heads and faces with the sign of defeat on their face. I feel the photo is more emotionally charged in a sad way rather than happy. I see the exhaustion and hurt on the men’s face in this photograph rather than the victory of the flag raising photo. Looking at the photo I feel pure sadness just seeing the hurt and pain on their faces. Looking at photos to find to use for this assignment is extremely emotional of the hardships these men faced.
