Introduction

This last part of the module will introduce you to the principles associated with visual narrative and storytelling, which includes time and motion. It will also explore character generation and manipulation in relation to the moving image. By the end of the unit you will understand how to apply narrative and time-based strategies to simple examples of work, and to be able to those principles to a practice-based piece of work. The key aspect of the unit will be the introduction of time/moving images, and time-based work as something with a discreet vocabulary and set of practices.

Read the following article by Asa Berger. It’s on “the Nature of Narratives” and discusses the significance of storytelling and narrative in our lives, and reviews their various forms, in literature and art. Take time to go through the article, and make notes on it, since it will be important when it comes to the activity you are being asked to do at the end of this lesson.
“We are exposed to narrative texts from our earliest days, when our mothers sing lullabies and recite nursery rhymes for us. The songs and simple verse we learn when we are small children are narratives.” Asa Berger

Question:

G. Review and analyse 1 example of a time-based work and write a review of how the story has been told through visual strategies and narrative form, (250-300 words). Explain why you think it works as a method of telling a story.

H. Reviewing interactive videos by Leishman, consider whether the ‘point and click’ interactivity destroy the story? What do you think and why? How many more examples of non-linear narratives can you find? Research these topics and write a short review of narrative and non-linear narratives. (150-200 words).

I. Take a day in your life (any day), and tell the ‘story’ of it, or of a part of it, in the form of a visual storyboard. Create a storyboard template first as a frame. Consider what you wish to convey (repetition of events, or something which happens unexpectedly). The first part of the process will require you to think about how the story is sequenced, and whether it is linear or non-linear. You will then need to consider the story arc, and how it progresses. Is there a point in the day when the story comes to a head? How does it conclude? Select an appropriate medium to create it.

J. Research the work of other illustrators, animators and filmmakers whose work you find interesting to help you create your work. Pay particular attention to how they produce their work, and what processes they go through to achieve the final result in the medium they have chosen. Create a visual map of their working process to assist your storytelling process.

K. Sketch out a minimum of 16 frames for your storyboard. Consider pace, composition ‘ scale of what is happening in each frame. Explore the story arc and the narrative structure and why (linear/non-linear, simple, complex). Indicate what medium your final work would be produced in: film/animation/stop-motion: drawn, cut paper, photomontage, etc. Create a visual map / workflow diagram of your design plan and write a reflection of your
process as you design in your sketchbook.
