And then formulate an original historical argument utilizing the selected primary source. Please draw on Laura Lewis’ analysis of witchcraft in colonial Mexico. Consider the methodologies she employs to read and analyze inquisition cases.  Your essay should be argumentative, meaning that you will make a case for what the particular Inquisition case you are analyzing can tell us more broadly about gender, caste, status, sexuality, and cultural hybridity in colonial Latin American societies.  Some questions to consider: Did the acts of witchcraft depicted in your source constitute an autonomous realm of resistance? What were the colonial implications or imaginings of caste revealed in the source? What can it tell us about colonial forms of domination and subordination? Mechanisms for the creation and maintenance of social hierarchies and colonial ideologies? Does the document reveal any gendered or racialized forms of agency for the historical subjects involved?
