Research Paper (50 points) and Outline (10 points): Students will be responsible for writing
a research paper that is a systematic replication (see definition of systematic replication in
Kazdin book) of a previous behavioral research study that used a single-subject research
design published within the last five years. You should conduct a systematic replication of
an article that was published in one of the following journals only: (a) Journal of Applied
Behavior Analysis (JABA), (b) Behavioral Interventions, (c) Education and Treatment of
Children, and (d) Behavior Analysis in Practice. The written research paper must follow the
format recommended by the American Psychological Association (see Publication Manual
of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition). The paper should include: (a) a
brief Introduction (i.e., a literature review, justification, and rationale for the experiment), (b)
Method, (c) Results, (d) Discussion, (e) References, and (f) Figure/s (graphs made in
Microsoft Excel). The text of the paper should not exceed 2,500 words. See the “brief
report” or “report” articles published in JABA for an example of a short research paper. The
paper must be a “new” paper (i.e., it has not been turned in elsewhere for another course).
Your study cannot just be an increase in the number of participants or using participants of
different cultural backgrounds, genders, or ages. Studies on the topic of decreasing a
problem behavior will not be approved, as any study on this topic first requires a functional
behavior assessment (FBA) to be completed, and you will not learn about how to conduct
an FBA until you take Psy 617. Something about the procedures needs to change. See the
limitations of the study in the Discussion section of the publication you are extending for
ideas as to what you can do differently from the original article. Your study must use one of
the following single-subject research designs: (1) ABAB, (2) multiple baseline (across
participants, settings, or behaviors), (3) changing criterion, (4) multielement, or (5) a
combination of 1-4.
a. Here are some steps for how to develop your research topic:
i. Get the most recent issue of a journal (e.g., the Journal of Applied Behavior
Analysis)
ii. Look at all the titles to see if anything sounds interesting
iii. Pick an article that sounds interesting
iv. Read the discussion to see if any of their future ideas sounds good or
limitations sound interesting
1. If yes, develop research questions based upon that idea or limitation
(if limitation, replicate the study but fix the limitation)
2. If no, go back to step 2
v. Develop procedures from the article’s Method section.
