Possible Topics and Approaches for Essay #3
Some possible topics for Essay #3 include the following, but see me if you have another idea or want to go in a different direction. Before you can write your Essay #2: Research Proposal, you will have to choose your approach and topic for Essay #3:
Expanded Rhetorical Analysis
Building on your Rhetorical Analysis Essay (Essay #1), choose multiple persuasive texts by the same author/speaker or about the same issue, examine the background and context for this issue (or author), and do an expanded rhetorical analysis in which you analyze multiple texts to argue for what rhetorical strategies and appeals are most effective at persuading audiences and achieving the desired purposes (or not).
Problem-Solution Proposal
Introduce a problem (local, national, or global; environmental, political, economic, social, or medical, etc.), discuss some background and context for the problem and its causes, effects, etc., and propose one or more practical solutions to this problem. Your thesis should address the problem and your proposed solution(s).
Other Research-Based Argument Essay
If neither of the above essay approaches appeal to you, you could consider doing one of the following or another academic research paper of your choice that is approved by me. Whatever topic and approach you choose, you will need to develop a research question, answer it with an arguable thesis, and support your thesis and main points with credible research appropriate for an academic audience. See me with any questions.

As you approach this assignment, think of research as exploration and investigation—searching to find out what is out there, to discover what you think, to answer your questions, and to satisfy your curiosity. Choose a topic that you are genuinely interested in so that you can learn more about it and develop an informed position.
Time Management
The most important factor in doing well on this paper will be effective time management. Most of your work will take place outside of class, on your own time, with as much or as little help from me as you choose. Your topic choice, reading material, and ideas will all be created on your part. This project is as much about self-discipline as it is about research. I have set up timeline deadlines to help you effectively manage the workload, but the majority of the responsibility falls on you. Don’t wait until the last minute to do it.
Grading
Your research paper will be evaluated according to the course goals and grading criteria outlined in the course syllabus. The grading criteria for this assignment will consider the quality of your research question, topic, discussion, development, organization, style, and mechanics, etc., and you can find the grading criteria in the Essay #2 resources on the “Essay Assignments” page in the “Major Assignments” module in Canvas.
