DESCRIPTION:
Over the course of the semester, you read a handful of fictional short stories that explore 19th-Century transnational perceptions between the United States and England. While much time has passed between the original publication of these texts and the present day, these works are still culturally valuable in various ways and for various reasons.
For your final essay, you will write a 3-4 page, thesis-driven essay that explores the contemporary relevance of one of the following short stories:
+ “English Writers on America” (1819) by Washington Irving.
+ “The Art of Book-Making” (1819) by Washington Irving.
+ “Roscoe” (1819) by Washington Irving.
+ “The Mutability of Literature” (1819) by Washington Irving.
+ “Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall-Street” (1853) by Herman Melville.
+ “The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids” (1855) by Herman Melville.
+ “Poor Man’s Pudding and Rich Man’s Crumbs” (1854) by Herman Melville.
While the goal of this essay is to consider why your selected story still matters today, don’t be afraid to also acknowledge how things have societally changed or evolved since the story’s original publication.
EXPECTATIONS ANDA NOTES ON CONSTRUCTION :
+ A clear topic of focus :
It is important that your essay feel “cohesive” and not fragmented. Select one clear topic of focus in relation to your selected story and maintain focus on that topic throughout.
+ A clear thesis claim :
A thesis claim always answers a question. Your thesis should answer a question along the following lines of thought:
* Why is the text still valuable/relevant to contemporary readers?
* What insights do contemporary readers gain/learn from the text?
+ A concise introduction : Since this essay is relatively short, keep the introduction brief so that the bulk of your commentary is evidence-based analysis. Your introduction should simply identify the title, author, and year published of your selected text, identify the topic of focus, and present the thesis claim.
+ Effective organization : The organization of your essay should, of course, be logical and meaningful. Your essay should not be 1 or 2 gigantic paragraphs. I also expect explicit transitions between body paragraphs that connect the overall point of each body paragraph.
+ Effective integration and close reading analysis of direct textual evidence to support commentary :
Only direct quotes should be used as textual evidence to support your commentary because close reading can only be applied to direct quotes. Paraphrasing is not a valid form of textual evidence (and should not be used) because close reading cannot be applied to paraphrases. I want to see topics of focus explored comprehensively—the more evidence supplied, the better. MLA in-text citations must be included throughout.
+ An extremely concise conclusion :
As a general rule, conclusions should be approximately half the length of introductions.
+ Careful proofreading:
Double-check your work carefully before submission. Quality of presentation must match the quality of the content.
+ Adherence to instructions , including the following “Logistical Instructions”:

+ Submission: As a PDF or Word Doc attachment only.
+ MLA Requirements: Must include correct MLA in-text citations throughout. No Works Cited page required.
+ No secondary sources permitted! I am interested only in your individual perceptions of a work!
+ Correctly spelled names and accurately presented titles.
