A referral has been received from the primary school regarding concerns about Ella. Ella is 7 years old and she currently lives in temporary accommodation with her mother Laura. Laura has a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia (alongside anxiety and depression). As a result of chronic pain and fatigue Laura has not been able to sustain employment. The school reports that since the holiday period Ella has noticeably lost weight and she appears quiet, withdrawn and disinterested in lessons. Ella no longer plays with her friends and she is often seen sitting alone in the playground. Ella’s school uniform is incorrect and there have been occasions when she has arrived at school with unwashed clothes and smelling unclean. Ella is frequently late for school in the mornings and Laura is often late to collect her at the end of the day. Laura has told the school that she recently was assessed for Universal Credit alongside Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and she is scared that she might lose her benefits because she does not understand the paperwork she completed. She also does not think that she has not paid enough National Insurance Contributions for this but again does not understand what this means. Laura and Ella are currently living in temporary accommodation after they were evicted by a private landlord for not keeping up with the rent payments. The building they are living in is notorious in the area for anti-social behaviour, drug and gang activity. They have been living there for two years.
