This week we will be building on our analysis of inequality, focusing explicitly on race and racial inequalities in the United States. As demonstrated in Smedley’s article and in the film clips from Race: The Power of an Illusion, there is no biological basis for the idea of race, yet the concept has had considerable social, economic, and political effects. This week you’ll be examining how the concept of race was developed over time, and the impacts this idea has had on people of color in the United States.
