Definition and History
T’ai Chi is an abbreviation for T’ai Chi Chuan (also written as Taijiquan) and is an
ancient Chinese Form of exercise originally created as a fighting art. The origin of T’ai
Chi dates back to over 700-1500 years (depending on different historians).
T’ai Chi is a type of Qigong (Chi Kung) practiced by millions of people around the
world each day. Qigong translated from Chinese, means energy or breath skill. T’ai Chi
Chuan was created by applying the concept of T’ai Chi to very natural movements using
relaxation and breathing to generate health, longevity, internal strength and power.
Although T’ai Chi was originally a Martial Art, it is practiced today as an excellent form
of exercise with many health benefits. Those who are advanced in the art of T’ai Chi
claim that focusing the mind solely on the movements of each form bring about a state
of mental calm and clarity.
T’ai Chi Founder
A 12th century Taoist Monk, named Zhang San Feng is considered the creator and
founder of this ancient art form. Zhang San Feng explains T’ai Chi as follows:
“In every movement, every part of the body must be light, agile and strong
together. The postures should be without breaks. Motions should be rooted
in the feet, released through the legs, directed by the waist and expressed
by the fingers. Substantial and insubstantial movements must be clearly
differentiated”.
Five Styles of T’ai Chi
The Five Styles of T’ai Chi are Chen (original), Yang, Wu, Sun and Hao.
Yang Style of T’ai Chi
The Yang Style is often considered the most popular form of T’ai Chi and is the most
practiced across the globe today. It was founded by Yang Lu-ch’an in the mid 1800s and
builds off of the original Chen Style.
The Yang Style focuses more on improving flexibility through grand, sweeping
movements that are executed in a slow and graceful motion.
