Your final project for the course will be a business report due in our last week.
It will present the pros and cons of two or more approaches to a business problem and a report about which approach makes the best sense for your audience/recipient.
You do not have to choose your topic/business problem yet.
This group exercise is about presenting and explaining the template for researched business reports in general.
Instructions for Exercise #5: Group Work: Creating a PowerPoint
Join a group and get started by day three, Tuesday.
4 or 5 students per group is ideal–stay with the same classmates as before if you like.
Goal: As a group create one PowerPoint that lays out the components of a business research report with an explanation and an example of each component. This exercise is as much about the process of collaboration as it is about getting acquainted with what a business report contains.
The purpose of your PowerPoint is first to define and then to illustrate what each component looks like.
The examples the group presents for each component can be various (on different subjects/topics), and it’s OK to borrow examples from our text.
You do not need to choose (or research) a specific topic for this exercise; that would be more time-consuming than we want here.
When the time comes to start your own business report, you will choose a topic then.
Length: there’s no specific length requirement because one of the skills is to work that out, making sure it includes all the essentials with nothing extra that would interfere with clarity, visual appeal, and memorability.
Since what you are creating is a PowerPoint/teaching tool, think of the audience as students like yourself.
Steps:
One person in the group should take the lead and upload a PowerPoint “draft” to this discussion forum so that the other group members can contribute to it until it is finished.
Contribute by downloading and adding to the PowerPoint and re-posting it, or by offering new ideas and content in a forum post so that the “leader” can cut and paste what you’ve contributed into the PowerPoint.
Please keep the discussion and your sharing to this forum rather than reverting to Google docs or other outside sites or to email.
One person in the group should post the finished version to the PowerPoint Showcase in week 8–to share with the whole class. You will be graded on it as on a regular discussion/exercise forum.
This is a Week 8 activity so it is due at the end of the week. That said, it is OK to ask for a group extension to get it done. I know that the timing on collaborative work can be a challenge. In fact, extending a deadline for the good of a project can be considered a business skill.
According to our text, these are the components of a Long Business Research Report:
Transmittal letter
Title page
Abstract
Table of contents
List of illustrations (if there will be any)
Text of report/proposal (a brief outline is enough if you don’t have an example handy)
Works Cited page
Appendix (if appropriate)
Note: Your examples of each item on this list may be on a mix of topics if you like (to make it easier).
Certainly, the example business research report on pp. 348-361 of Chapter 8 is going to be helpful in preparing your PowerPoint. If the instructions and guides in Chapter 8 are not sufficient, please look at Chapter 15 “Writing Careful Long Reports” for more variety in examples and more detailed advice and ideas.
Please be in touch if you need help or if this exercise poses logistical problems for you–I’d like to help smooth it out.
