You just graduated from college and accepted a job that pays $42,000 per year, which is $3,500 per month.  You will be living in a new town, so living with your parents is not an option.  You have a 15 year old car that runs fine, but it has 300,000 miles and you know at some point you will need a car.  You have no savings.  You owe $10,000 in student debt which requires payments of $200 per month.
Create a monthly budget that lists at least 10 categories of spending (you are welcome to do more).  You either need to budget for a car payment, or budget for putting cash aside to buy a car down the road.  You have to pay for housing, insurance, transportation, entertainment, cell phone, streaming services, electricity, food, etc.  All of your monthly expenses have to total $3,500 or less.
Explain what kind of housing you expect to have and the car you plan on buying or leasing (either now or in the future) and estimate the payment using an auto loan calculator.  Did you include all of your expenses in your budget? How do you plan on paying for any emergencies that arise like an unexpected medical bill?
WAIT! You forgot to deduct all of the taxes taken out from your check.  Assume taxes of 15% (this includes federal and state taxes) are taken out of your check along with 5% for your 401k.  How much money will you take home every month after taxes and retirement? Will your budget change?  Do you have to make any changes to your expenses or lifestyle?  Prepare a new budget with your revised income after taxes.
