Comparative Paper
For this assignment, you will select two branches of feminist thinking that we read about over the course of the class (Black, Chicana, Indigenous, Asian American, and transnational). In 1200-1400 words, your paper should provide a debatable thesis comparing the two branches. That thesis should be clearly identifiable at the end of your introduction paragraph. By debatable I mean that this assignment is not an informative essay. There must be a clearly stated, debatable thesis guiding the organization of the paper. While I am not expecting you to provide and support a claim that no scholar has proposed before, your thesis should be something with which a reasonable person who has read these readings could conceivably disagree. Your final draft should explicitly, albeit briefly, address one or more realistic counterarguments – explaining both the counterargument and why you still believe your thesis is correct.
You should use our class readings (cited in MLA format with both in-text citations and a Works Cited page) to support your argument, but no additional research is required for this assignment. Your analysis comparing the two kinds of feminism you select should be the most prominent feature of the paper, meaning that your analysis is not overshadowed by summary and quotations.
Your paper should contain a clear introduction and conclusion and be delivered in a logical, linear order. Your thesis should indicate the structure of your paper, which should correspond to informative topic sentences that signal the contents of each body paragraph. Additionally, your papers should utilize a professional tone, have minimal grammatical errors, and provide MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page for all sources that you reference in the paper.
For an example, I’m providing a thesis statement along with a brief outline of how I would expect the paper to be structured:
Introduction Paragraph: Thesis: The articles “Latina feminism(s)” and “Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Feminisms” both link their work to Black activism, even though Latina and Asian American Feminisms are more similar in their core beliefs. This strategy has the effect of reinforcing the US tendency to assume that racial conditions in the US are largely and exclusively about Black and White people.
Body Paragraph 1: How “Latina feminism(s)” connects Latina feminism to Black feminism.
Body Paragraph 2: How “Asian American Feminisms and Women of Color Feminisms” connects Asian American feminism to Black feminism.
Body Paragraph 3: Why Asian American and Latina feminisms have more in common to each other than to Black feminism
Possible counterargument: Either “Asian American and Latina feminisms actually are more similar to Black feminism than to each other” OR “Linking their feminism to Black feminism does not have the effect of reinforcing a narrow focus on primarily Black and White people in the US”
^ You only need to address one counterargument in your paper, and you can do so as it’s own paragraph or in a related body paragraph (in this example, I would probably address the first counterargument example in Body Paragraph 3, rather than on its own). Wherever you address your counterargument, be sure to follow it up with your response on why your thesis is still correct.
Conclusion Paragraph
Map of Feminist Thinking
Following the paper, you should provide a list of characteristics (three or more characteristics per branch) for each of the branches of feminist thought and theory listed below:
Black
Chicana
Indigenous
Asian American
Transnational
White
For white feminism, you’ll need to infer from our readings about women of color feminisms. Just as Black feminism is a set of beliefs and values, not just a group of feminists who happen to be Black, white feminism names a specific philosophy. It’s more than a reference to feminists who happen to be white.
For a few examples, characteristics might look something like:
builds coalitions throughout a broad geographic region, not just the US (Castillo 12-14)
rejects capitalism and class inequality (Lorde 58)
raises awareness about forced sterilization (Yamada 23)
As I’ve done in these examples, please provide an MLA in-text citation to show where in the text that characteristic is discussed
