Conversation with Dave about change in his drinking habit using Motivational Interviewing.
As a social worker l was assigned to Dave an African American man by his PCP to elicit change talk about his drinking habit. In the process, l utilized Motivational Interviewing by exploring his reasons for change.
Dave was upset about this meeting. He believes it makes no sense to be referred to a social worker before he can have access to his pain medication from his PCP/ PCP note to attest that he is good to return to work. I started by educating him on how alcohol might interact with his medication in a dangerous way, and that my mission is to support him to achieve his goal. During this meeting, l utilized the Motivational Interviewing process of engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning with him. I was able to collaborate in a client-centered therapeutic relationship, demonstrate respect by being culturally sensitive, effective use of QARS during the intervention, and use rulers to have a client self–assess and communicate his motivation, along with expressing empathy during each session in an appropriate manner.

Write a 3–4-page reflection and critical analysis paper based on the simulation with Gabe Turner. Identify your multiple identities. If this was a real client, how might your identities and the client’s identities be important? Pay particular attention to the dynamics of privilege and oppression. Analyze the substance-related racial disparities that are critical pieces of the psychosocial, healthcare and political context in the simulation. If this client requires treatment, summarize your treatment recommendations, if any, and identify the factors that might facilitate or thwart the client’s engagement in care. Include at least 5 references in APA 7th edition style, please add the URLs of the sources used. Also, number each page.
