This is a simulation conversation.
John Coke, an African American man was referred to my office (social worker) by his primary care physician (PCP) who was concerned about his drinking habit and how this might affect John’s health. Motivational interview was utilized to elicit a change talk. John was not too happy about his meeting with me (the social worker) because he felt that he only came to the clinic for his prescriber to give him a pain medication and a note to enable him returned to work. I was able to educate John about the effects or cons of alcohol interaction with medication.
During the meeting with John, the following tools were utilized, the Motivational Interviewing process of engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning. In addition, I was able to collaborate client- centered therapeutic relationship, effective use of QARS during intervention, and using rulers to have a client self –access and communicate hi​‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌​s motivation, demonstrate respect by being culturally sensitive, along with expressing empathy during each session in an appropriate manner.
Question
Write a 3-page reflection and critical analysis paper based on the simulation with John Coke.
1. Identify your multiple identities. If this was a real client, how might your identities and the client’s identities be important? Pay particular attention to dynamics of privilege and oppression. 2. Analyze the substance-related racial disparities that are critical pieces of the psychosocial, healthcare, and political context in the simulation.
3. If this client requires treatment, summarize your treatment recommendations, if any, and identify the factors that might facilitate or thwart the client’s engagement in care.
