Civic crowdfunding offers an alternative to privatization which is more interesting (at least to me). In this model, cities (again struggling with more responsibilities and less intergovernmental revenue – see discussion under our main forum for this week) have decided not to invest in projects that are popular in the community. Instead, the community has decided to fund these projects themselves through crowdfunding. See the below articles on crowdfunding. In the ICMA article you can actually read a White Paper by Can Chen and John R. Bartle on the use of this method to fund infrastructure.

What do you think about this approach to funding city projects? Do you think that this is sustainable or very limited in scope? Can you imagine this being a substitute for privatization where this coupled with another concept (co-production) will increase responsibilities for services on individual neighborhoods / communities within the city? For more information on co-production, see the article uploaded into Moodle this week (Sorrentio et al., 2018).
