Over the course of the semester, you will be compiling a listening journal
(12 entries in Part A, 12 entries in Part B). For each module, you are recommended to choose two musical works from the listening list. Alternatively (and at your discretion), you can choose other songs which fit with the weekly lecture topic. For each listening journal entry, please provide the following information:
Title of Work
Album or Name of Larger Work (or N/A)
Genre
Year of composition/recording release
A brief summary of what this song is about
Why is this musical work important in the broader context of the history of rock?
Be sure to put song titles in quotations marks and larger works in italics (“Bohemian Rhapsody”, from the album A Night at the Opera). For detailed information on properly formatting song titles, visit the following site.

Grading Criteria:
Complete – Provides song title, album (if applicable), performing artist, and year of recording. Student provides a short (3-6 sentence) paragraph of discourse. Examples of things to write about: what musical elements are heard, personal connection to a song (what does the student like or dislike about this recording), the cultural context of the work’s importance, etc.
Incomplete – Does not satisfy requirements for “complete”. Please resubmit.
