Choose one (1) of the following prompts and write an argument essay. Remember
that the essays are reader based; therefore, you’ll need to use quotes or paraphrases
from the text as evidence and/or support for your thesis.

At one point his essay, The Ballot or The Bullet, Malcom X says that he does not
consider himself an American, then he goes on to explain why. He catches a lot of flack
about that statement because some critics proclaim that even though Africans brought to
America get off a different kind of boat, their descendants become American non-the-
less, and he’s in that category. Really think about what he says and why, and ask your
self is he off the mark or dead on it and write an essay where you either agree or disagree
with X’s point of view. Use the essay to prove your position.

The thesis statement must be the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.
 Be written clearly, using the MLA format without a cover sheet.
 Be written in 3rd person. Do not use I, me, my, and especially no misuse of the
possessive pronoun, you.
 A proper introduction that opens in one of the ways learned in 1301and has the
thesis statement as its last sentence.
 Topic sentence paragraph unity. Whatever the topic sentence says, the paragraph
should follow through.
 Strong body paragraphs that use at least one quote or paraphrase (per body
paragraph) from the text as support or evidence. This is your paper so write it
from your perspective, but nobody cares about your opinion. That’s why we write
in 3rd person. You will use quotes or paraphrases to validate what you’ve said.
The quotes are your expert testimony to make sure this is not just your opinion—
it’s backed by an authority. However, don’t just throw quotes/paraphrases in all
willy-nilly. They must make sense in context where you place them.
 I am not only interested in what you write but how well you write it, so use good
syntax, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. I am strongly looking at these
things.
 A conclusion that ends your essay by reiterating the thesis statement, offering a
solution, projecting forward or any other proper closing mechanism learned and
accomplished in 1301. Remember, the conclusion is its own paragraph.
