In my Aviation career I’ve been blessed to have flown many different types of aircraft, from a L-13 Blanik glider to a CRJ-900 series aircraft and hopefully even bigger still in the near future. I’ve been able to experience low altitude, low speed flying when I was an instructor as well as high altitude, high speed flying now in the airlines. At my current job much of the flying we is do is very automated and at cruise flight, we never push to the limits of the performance envelope or practice maneuvers like I did when I was an instructor except when we do our yearly simulator training for re-qualifications. So this class has been a great welcome because it has forced me to get back to the basics and study aerodynamics again which is so important and makes us much better pilots. Even though there was no “New” concept from studying our book, Flight Theory and Aerodynamics: A Practical Guide for Operational Safety, I was reintroduced to old concepts. Especially the jet aircraft performance and the thrust required curve (Dole, et.al., 2016), particularly discussing the angle of climb and rate of climb which is a little different compared to power producing engine (propeller aircraft). Thrust produced by jet engine does not change much with speed, however, it does effect props which effects rate of climb. This sparked my interest and finding different speeds and angles for the aircraft to most efficiently climb is important, I have even applied some of the techniques and formulas from the book out when I’m flying the line and has produced interesting results and had made me more aware of Jet aircraft performance.

What would be the single most important concept that was new to you?
The single most important concept I believe to be new to me is Performance and design based limitations, with concern to Vne, takeoff, and landing considerations.
This course introduced me to the aerodynamics behind high-speed flight and the Vne limitations brought on by the design and power components of Fixed wing aircrafts. I myself am a Helicopter pilot. The training I went through, retreating blade stall was a core foundation of the training. But when I trained fixed wing, exceeding Vne was not a huge component of training. It was glossed over. And structural instability was the only topic. This course also gave me a better understanding of the mechanics that are involved in landing and taking off with Tailwinds.
Why was it important, and how will it make you a better and safer pilot?
Actually understanding what happens when an aircraft attempts to exceed Vne I believe now will make me a bit more hasentent when chasing tailwinds for that speed increase. As well as being more conscious when taking off and landing with a tail wind.
Romans 12:6–8 says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” I hope my new found knowledge can be a benefit to others in the future. Both as a tool and a foundation for building skill and knowledge.
