I’m studying for my Psychology class and need an explanation.

DO NOT FOGET YOU HAVE TO WRITE IT USING CAPCON!!! EXAMPLE BELOw

Your forum grades depend on how well you learn and show you’ve learned CONCEPTS introduced in your textbook. To do this you must use the CAPCON system for all assignments. Whenever you are applying a TEXTBOOK CONCEPT, type it in ALL CAPS. Also, whenever you apply a TEXTBOOK CONCEPT, don’t just “name drop” it. That is, don’t just state the concept. You have to explain what the concept is and how it applies. Be sure to note the video you are discussing.

BAD EXAMPLE

I saw the video on an astrologer reading someone’s personality. It was so fake I could tell he was making it up!

BETTER EXAMPLE

VIDEO VIEWED: This is a review of Jon Smith’s video on Astrology. Mr. Smith, the astrologer, claimed to use his client’s horoscope to predict that “something good will happen in the future” and that the client “recently had an accident.” In term of the textbook, the astrologer’s reading use using two tricks: VAGUE READINGS that can be interpreted in any way, and UNIVERSAL FACTS that apply to nearly everyone (nearly everyone has had a recent accident, even a small one.”

F 10.11.1: SUPERFORUM: YOU CAN BECOME A PSYCHIC! SPECIAL CRASH COURSE
In this lesson you will be trained to become a Psychic Investigator. When you complete this assignment, you will have better skills at psychic reading than the million-dollar psychics that frequently appear on TV! Yes, you will know how they do it, and much more.Your key to becoming a successful and rich psychic is “The Psychic Toolkit” on pp. 142 – 151 in your text.

First, select three world-famous TV psychics from the YouTube links. Begin your assignment with a single 300-word overview presenting what you think is key information for each world-famous psychic (100 words for each psychic). Your source for your introduction is presented right in the lesson, namely the psychic’s official web page and a decent Wikipedia entry. Here’s a complete list of the world-famous psychics:

1. Rosemary Altea

2. Sylvia Browne

3. Theresa Caputo

4. Allison DuBois

5. John Edward

6. James van Praagh

Then select three readings, one for each psychic you chose. View the reading.

From the Psychic Toolkit identify which tools are used in each reading you view. Give examples with quotes from videos. For your readings, turn in only one 600 word report describing the “psychic tools” the psychic uses. Use the “Toolkit” on pp. 142-151 in your text. Explain why the tool works.

In your analysis be sure to include three things:

1. The name of your psychic

2. Quotes that you chose to analyze

3. What Psychic Toolkit tools the quote iillustrates.

Bad example:

I viewed this psychic who said he could bend spoons with his mind (ERROR: PSYCHIC NOT NAMED). He did a very bad job and you could tell he was tricking us. (ERROR: TOOLKIT TOOL NOT NAMED). A lot of people viewing him probably fell for his trick. (SUPERFICIAL AND VAGUE ANALYSIS)

Better example

I viewed Uri Geller’s attempt to bend spoons on the Johnny Carson show. He could not bend spoons. He said, “You have negative energy.” The Psychic Toolkit tool this demonstrates is “blaming the other person.” This permits Geller to continue claiming he has psychic powers because his claim “cannot be falisified.” (He will always blame you when a trick doesn’t work!).

Below is a list of six world-famous psychics. All have frequently appeared on TV. Most have been “validated” by “psychic scientists” as the real thing. Before continuing, please read this example:

Intro

COLLAPSE

Rosemary Altea, whose webpage has recently been removed from the Internet, is a self-reported spiritual psychic medium and (energy) healer who has written six books on the subjects. She claims to have been experiencing psychic visions at a very young age. And, according to Altea, her parents threatened to send her to a psychiatric hospital because of these paranormal visions. She seems to be somewhat famous and has appeared in popular media programs like Larry King Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and others… Although her actions in the early 2000s are unforgivable, I do feel sympathy towards events in her earlier life. Rosemary quit school at 16; married at 19; and found herself screwed, broke, and unable to take care of her daughter after her divorce (why she started charging for readings).

John Edward is a self-proclaimed psychic medium with a knack for predicting future events. Unlike Rosemary and James, John does not claim to have been born with his mystic talents. He “confirmed” the legitimacy of his newfound powers in his many books, but predominantly in both of his TV shows where he would read the audience and air a split screen (half his face, half the audience’s reactions). One particularly gross piece of Edward’s personal history is that he filmed a TV special communicating with the victims of 9/11, essentially profiting from the shocked, suffering families that sought out closure for their loved ones.

James Van Praagh claims to have a set of impressive, versatile psychic abilities which were made known at a very young age. In addition to having mastered his self-proclaimed clairvoyant and survival evidence medium abilities, James offers various (expensive) courses said to guide others in finding their intuition and harnessing paranormal powers. His notoriety extends far beyond the niche psychic-believing community as he is also an author, talk show host, and television screenwriter and producer. James defends his skills by pointing to his reputation (having worked with “International Heads of State, religious world leaders and known entertainment celebrities”)… Interesting — in 2013 James sued his sister, and fellow psychic, for using his trademarked name… that they were both born with…

COLLAPSE

Rosemary AlteaThis psychic is known for her HOT READINGS (finding out information on the stranger ahead of time) and simply, cheating. She is a well-known “psychic and healer” due to her many appearances on popular television shows, such as Oprah and Larry King. She was also mentioned in the PENN & TELLER series we are watching in class. Altea uses group readings as a leeway to gather information and observation, therefore being able to conduct her HOT READINGS. Her webpage is currently non-existent. Here is her Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary_Altea. . This is the reading I critiqued. Altea uses the tools TURN MISSES INTO HITS, SHOEHORNING, and DROP AND RETURN. Altea used TURN MISSES INTO HITS and DROP AND RETURN by concluding that a client’s mother was nervous, and didn’t get a reaction, so then proceeded to go back on her claim and claim the opposite- which was that she’s talkative and pushy (she then received a positive response-a nod and smile from the client). Further, She used SHOEHORNING by including broad claims that psychics use (e.g. they want you to know it’s not your fault, they miss you, etc.).
Theresa CaputoThis psychic/medium is well known for her television show Long Island Medium. Many celebrities have gone to her, which explains how she’s able to research and get the backstory of each of these stars’ information (HOT READING). She’s been criticized by famous James Randi as well as Inside Edition, claiming that she’s simply just a great actor and performer. Hence why she has her own reality TV series! Here’s her website: https://www.theresacaputo.com/. Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theresa_Caputo. #action=share. This is the reading I critiqued. The tools that Caputo utilized were SHOTGUNNING, DROP AND RETURN, and DRAW INFERENCES.Caputo shotgunned her audience by asking a client who put the makeup on her deceased mother. The client concluded she did not, but her mother’s makeup was smeared and she fixed it, therefore believing in Caputo’s claim to having a strong connection to makeup. Caputo also talks very fast. Caputo used DROP AND RETURN as well as DRAW INFERENCES by making a broad statement and going off of the client’s reactions to either continue with similar claims or drop the claim if it invoked no emotion. She saw an emotional client crying over his deceased mother and continued talking about common things that grieving family members would experience. E.g. The client didn’t visit one day, and then the client’s family died. They blamed themselves, so she concluded that the deceased family member said not to blame yourself (common!). John Edward
This psychic is well known for his psychic abilities, and used to have a television series on the Sci-Fi channel. He has been caught using COLD and HOT READINGS by James Randi as well as a skeptic activist, Susan Gerbic. Edward also received tons of backlash when he did a reading regarding victims of 9/11. His webpage can be found here: https://www.johnedward.net/. Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Edward.

This is the reading I critiqued. Some tools that Edward used were SHOTGUNNING, MULTIPLE OUT, and SHOEHORNING/TURN MISSES INTO HITS. Edward SHOTGUNNED by asking many questions, and talking super fast throughout his readings. He also kept asking the same questions over and over, maybe to persuade the audience that what he’s saying MAY be right… He used MULTIPLE OUT by insisting that the number 6 was significant to someone, even though she said many times that it was not. Eventually the client ignored the 6 claim due to him speaking “truthfully” on other claims. Further, he used SHOEHORNING/TURN MISSES INTO HITS by talking about the sensitive topic of suicide. Although the client did not say anyone had committed suicide, he turned it into someone MAY be WANTING to commit suicide, then proceeded to give a suicide talk to the audience.summery article: nursing essay help
