The Roman Empire lasted for roughly five hundred years; that is more than twice as long as America has existed as a country. The Roman Republic was an additional four to five hundred years of history. Chapter six covers the gradual decline of the Roman Empire. However, its conclusion was more than just the end of a great historical force. It was the next step of Western Civilization. This chapter has two things I want to discuss. The first is a reflection on the chapter itself. The second part is a reflection of our progress in western civilization and your understanding of civic engagement.
For the first part, explain the defining characteristics of the late Roman world. Pick any three aspects and explain how they are the defining aspects of the late Roman Empire. Things to consider- demographics, religions, politics, economics, and the changing world.
The second part of this chapter’s assignment is a reflection on civic engagement. We have now studied two of the most important civilizations in European and western history, Greece and Rome. Now consider our time, a distant but important descendant of both of those civilizations. How can you contribute to civic life and the well-being of local, national, and global communities? How can you do this as a socially responsible, lifelong learner?
