The Roman Republic transformed into the Roman Empire with the rise of Augustus to power. It sparked a golden age for Rome. The Pax Romana lasted for two hundred years, and Rome reached its greatest territorial extent. The level of international cultural, social, and economic interaction was unprecedented. This week you will identify three rulers of the Roman Empire. Each one should represent a different period of Rome’s development. For example, Augustus transformed Rome from the Republic to the empire; Caligula and his antics helped to solidify the government, despite his strange behavior, and Trajan extended the empire to a greater extent than it had ever been before. Those are just three examples. You will pick whatever three you think best identify distinct periods of the Roman Empire from 146 B.C.E to 180 C.E. Defend your choices by explaining what that emperor did; what the empire was like; what did the empire experience; what were socio-economic problems the empire faced, and why this is so important to the development of Western Civilization.
