What are your personal experiences concerning the issue of inclusion? What would you do to make every member feel included? What would you do with members who appear shy?
As a group leader, you are responsible for screening potential members to determine which ones would be appropriate for a particular group. As an interviewer, you might not have the same level or type of anxiety as the prospective members who are interviewed. How might you stay in touch with and be sensitive to their anxiety and need for inclusion within the group?
There are times when you may enter an already established group as the “outsider” to lead or consult. How do you envision working through your own need for inclusion and other expectations with a group that could be mistrustful or even hostile, depending on the circumstances? Perhaps you joining the group may even represent some threat to the established roles and feelings of inclusion for current group members. How might you sensitize yourself to the underlying concerns that members may have about your presence in the group?
Think back to some recent time when you’ve set goals for yourself. What was helpful for you in clarifying those goals? How did you find resources that assisted you in clarifying your goals?
What principal emotions tend to be stirred in you upon entering a new group? What thoughts are likely to accompany these emotions? How do you react to these thoughts and emotions? Do you act or react in certain ways in order to deal with any discomfort?
