Chapter 11 of your book discusses the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which speculated about the relation between language and thought (i.e. cognition). The 2016 movie “Arrival” is based, in part, on the phenomenon. There is a montage of scenes from that movie under the Video Clips tab entitled “Arrival-Sapir Whorf hypothesis.” You are not required to watch this clip (read the disclaimer underneath the clip) but it may inspire ideas in responding to this discussion prompt.
Describe the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis? In what ways do you think immersing yourself into a new language changes the way you think? How would you go about trying to communicate with someone who spoke a completely different language than you?
