Assignment Instructions
For this assignment, you will calculate the Mean Length of Utterance and Type Token Ratio for
a child. In the Assignment packet, I have provided a transcriiption of utterances from a child. The
child’s utterances have been transcribed for you. Each line contains on utterance from the
child. The video of this child’s language sample is available with the assignment on Canvas.
You may choose to watch the video to get an idea of this toddler’s language abilities. Note that,
when collecting a language sample, we usually try to capture mostly spontaneous utterances.
This child was responding to some close-ended questions which would naturally bring the MLU
down, but this was the best language sample I could find so we will use it for our purposes.
To calculate MLU, you will need to:
1. Review the presentation on Counting Morphemes and Calculating MLU, which is
provided in Part 4 of Module 6 on Canvas and also in your guided notes.
2. Count and write the number of morphemes for each utterance in the # Morphemes
column in Part A.
3. Count the number of utterances. Here are guidelines for counting utterances:
Usually, every intelligible utterance is transcribed and counted, but…
If an utterance contains anything unintelligible, completely delete the whole utterance
from your all of your totals.
If a child repeats an the exact same utterance (either a word or an entire utterance)
consecutively (e.g., if the child says “put it there” and then a few seconds later says the
same exact utterance, “put it there”), only count the first occurrence of the utterance in
your totals. Delete the other repeated utterance from your totals if they are consecutive.
However, if that same word or utterance shows up later in the sample (i.e., after the child
produced at least one utterance), count the origin and the later occurrence(s).
4. Determine the total number of utterances and the total number of morphemes. Double
check your work. Most errors are made by not adding the total morphemes correctly.
*Writing subtotals in the margin at about every 10th line as you count these up can help.
5. Calculate the toddler’s MLU.
6. Identify the corresponding stage of development using Brown’s Stage of Language
Development provided in the presentation and also on page 172 of your textbook.
7. Complete all of the boxes in Part B.
To calculate the TTR, you will need to:
1. Use the same language sample.
2. Review the rules and procedures for analyzing a sample and calculating TTR, which are
provided in Part 2 of Module 8 and also in your guided notes.
3. Using those rules and procedures, analyze the lexical diversity in this child’s language
sample following these steps:
A. Categorize each word the child uses into the table in Part C of the Assignment
Packet (i.e., write each word that is used once under the corresponding part of
speech).
B. Keep a tally of the number of times each word is used throughout the entire
sample. Then, on your packet, write the total number of times each word is used
next to the word in the table in Part C, e.g., if the child uses “big” twice in the
whole sample, write it like this: big (2)
C. Sum the total number of words (TNW) in the sample.
D. Sum the number of different words (NDW) used in the sample.
E. Calculate the Type-Token Ratio.
F. Enter the requested information in Part D of the Assignment packet.
Submit the entire assignment packet as one document by uploading it to the assignment on
Canvas. You can upload this as a word doc, pdf, or a jpg file. I cannot open Pages documents.
A language sample from the video below has been transcribed for you, and the transcriiption is provided in the Assignment Packet. You may choose to watch the video with the transcriiption in hand to get a sense of this toddler’s language use. To complete the assignment, you will calculate the MLU and TTR using the transcriiption and the rules that have been provided in the modules and on the Assignment Instructions.
Read the instructions carefully and then complete all parts of the Assignment Packet.
