This task involves the production of an example of effective written communication for the purpose of obtaining employment. The application is to be presented as a standard written job application, with a cover letter and a CV. Students will also be required to set up a Linkedin account.

The following are the instructions that will be given to students in relation to their portfolios:

This task requires the student to prepare a (mock) employment portfolio. It involves:
i. Researching and finding a “suitable” job to apply for (i.e. one that the student expects to be qualified for when he/she graduates, and would have a chance of securing). The job description needs to have a set of clear Key Selection Criteria (KSC’s). A copy of the job description and KSC are required to be submitted as an appendix.

ii. Writing a cover letter using one of the formatting styles covered earlier in the course and applying the “good news” order of information.

iii. Completing a CV in the “hybrid” format using the template in the week 7 resources folder on Moodle. It is to contain a career objective and skills section linked to the KSC for the job.

iv. Producing a professional Linkedin profile with an appropriate photo. It should include the student’s education background, employment history (including part time employment) and any special skills. The student should then:

2. Start a network by linking to at least three or four people with Linkedin accounts (“connections”) including your lecturer. Other people could include friends, Business School staff or any former employers.
A. Join a couple of "groups" based on his/her professional interests
B. Follow a couple of relevant companies of interest.
