Based on your reading of the play and viewing clips from the three films, you will do the
following according to the prompt and rubric below:
1) Form and defend an interpretive thesis about the prompt that takes into consideration
the purposes, motives, and effects of the writing decisions made by Shakespeare (and the
rest of the acting company, remember!) and the filming decisions made by the production
teams on the recent films. Consider written elements including word choice, metaphors,
poetic meter, and so on. Consider filmed elements including costume, body language, tone
of voice, and special effects.
2) Remember that open book exams are designed to allow for specificity and clear support
of analytical points, not excessive quoting and summary! Direct quotes must be designated
as such, but you are not required to do full formal citation, as this is a timed essay
read and graded as a first draft. As always, focus time and space on YOUR analysis.
3) Organize your time effectively, bring plenty of pens/pencils and paper, and impress me
as you have all semester!
4) You are welcome to draw on evidence from anywhere in the play, but each of your
analytical points MUST include support from all four works, so of necessity your essay
will focus most specifically on the particular scenes viewed in class.
Prompt 1: What is most powerful in the play? Love? Magic? Reason? Law? Something else? Some combination?
Prompt 2: Suggest an alternate staging—setting, time, casting, added or subtracted character, change of genre—be as
creative as you like.
Prompt 3: What in his own society/history/culture might Shakespeare be commenting on? How might the modern
interpretations be doing that for their/our own eras, or revising Shakespeare’s original comments?
