Rain is liquid precipitation, as opposed to other kinds of precipitation such as snow, hail and sleet. Rain requires the presence of a thick layer of the atmosphere to have temperatures above the melting point of water near and above the Earth’s surface. On Earth, it is the condensation of atmospheric water vapor into drops of water heavy enough to fall, often making it to the surface. Two processes, possibly acting together, can lead to air becoming saturated leading to rainfall: cooling the air or adding water vapor to the air. Virga is precipitation that begins falling to the earth but evaporates before reaching the surface; it is one of the ways air can become saturated. Precipitation forms via collision with other rain drops or ice crystals within a cloud. Rain drops range in size from oblate, pancake-like shapes for larger drops, to small spheres for smaller drops.
Instructions for project and Goading Rubric:
1-Follow the given instructions below for Experimental Procedures to make rain in your kitchen.
2-writing yourself while you are working on the “making rain” experiment. In the meantime, you must explain the procedure of the experimentation. (25% writing the experiment, and 25% explaining the experiment.)
3-Write a report of 2 to 3 pages, double spaced, APA style.
· List the material you used for this project (10%)
· Write your own experimental procedure as a step-by-step recipe (10%)
· Explain your observations as you talk about it in the video recording of your experiment. (10%)
· Discuss the physics concept. Explain in your report how this resembles, and differs from the way in which natural rain is formed. Support your answer with at least two in-text citations in APA style. (20) %
Experimental Procedure -Put a cup of water in a Pyrex saucepan or a coffeemaker and heat it slowly over a low flame. (or you can boil the water in a pot and pour it in a safe clear cup – do not burn yourself).
When the water is warm, place a saucer filled with ice cubes on top of the container. As the water below is heated, droplets from at the bottom of the cold saucer which combines until they are large enough to fall, producing a steady “rainfall” as the water below is gently heated.
