Research Report Writing Assignment:

Task:

The project is to allow a student to gain an understanding of an area of interest not otherwise covered within the program. Projects should provide a means for students to further develop networks in the industry, showcase their knowledge and further develop their skills.

The objectives of the aviation project course are to
-Undertake a research activity that produces a written report suitable for submission to an employer.
– Conduct research project activities with minimal supervision.

The aviation project could include business-based analysis, the collection of primary data (e.g. interview, surveys) and practical industry processes (e.g. development of a safety manual).
1. There needs to be a clear research problem from which aim(s) of the project are generated, which will help with the focus for the rest of the work.
2. The introduction should also outline the sections in the rest of the report.
3. Write the report logically and make it readable.
4. Relate your work directly to the aims / objectives.
5. As a general rule of thumb, make the Chapters roughly the same size, apart from may be the Introduction/ Conclusions which are usually shorter.
6. See the literature review, consider both academic and industry sources, and go from the general to the specific in topics, with gaps in the literature identified.
7. For the Methods chapter outline the methods used and reasons for using them (and not using other methods).
8. Include Tables, Figures and Graphs, particularly where they have something useful to show.  Use them wisely to break up the text, and do vary them.
9. Be logical with your analysis – try to find key findings linked to your aims / objectives.
10 Draw out conclusions from your findings.  In the final Chapter also consider further research and limitations of your research.
11. Anything extra that you want the reader to consider, but is too large in that it breaks up the flow in the report can go in an Appendix.

Methods aspects of your Project
Even if you are not considering primary data collection (e.g. conducting interviews or questionnaire surveys) as part of your project, you still need to know about these methods. In the Methodology chapter of your project, you should justify the methods and data you have used (e.g. if you did a critical review or a business analysis), and so will need knowledge of the range of tools available, including those you did not use.

When conducting primary data collection, researchers need to take account of ethical issues such as personal safety and the privacy of participants. Good practice, regarding ethical procedures, includes the following:

·       Consider the safety of researcher and participants

·       Provide an information sheet to participants

·       Preserve participants right to privacy – they can withdraw at any stage

·       Keep full records of survey work e.g. location, time

·       Exclude vulnerable groups such as children

·       Do not provide incentives
