Several of the participants, varying in years of experience, age, band and place of work was extremely negative about the Divisional Training days and questioned their value. Darren, an ODP working in General Theatres with five years’ experience considered that “Divi day is a complete waste of time”, an opinion which is reiterated by Ben, who describes them as “a bootless errand.” Fiona, an ODP working in Ambulatory Care, with over twenty years’ experience, expressed concern that these negative opinions were commonly held across the
ODP workforce. She talks about how some ODPs’ do not take divisional training days seriously and do not engage with it. “ODPs’ don’t take divine day seriously, most ODPs’ see it as a play day, a joke, or a day out of theatre where they don’t have to work, or they take the day off.”

Ability to protect and attend divisional training days

Some participants expressed their frustration for the poor organisational structure of divisional training days. They both express concerns that divisional training days should be protected time where all ODPs’ should be able and, indeed be expected to attend. Anna talks negatively about the ability to deliver protected divisional training days “There are usually lots of emergencies that come in on divi day, so training is
usually abandoned anyway, so it’s pointless really.” An opinion, similarly held by Darren “on the odd occasion, I have been granted permission to attend divi days, it has been a zoo, absolute chaos, no organisation whatsoever.” He also goes on to state “Personally, I think divi day should be better allocated, organised, time managed.”
