Before you begin this assignment, refer to the Literary Terms for Short Stories Analysis Activity and A New Handbook of Literary Terms in the Week 2 learning activities folder.
Select 1 of the short stories you were assigned to read for this week (a different story than the one you chose for the discussion). Write 4 paragraphs on the story using the University Library and the original work you select for your resources.
Write an 800- to 1,000-word paper responding to the following:
Paragraph 1: Share the author and title of the short story you selected. What is the central theme of this short story? What surprised you about the theme of this story, and why is this theme important for readers?
Paragraph 2: Choose 1 of the other literary terms important to the study of the short story genre. Explain that literary term in context of the story you chose. Give specific examples from the story to illustrate how that element is used in the short story you have chosen.
Paragraph 3: Visit the University Library. Locate 1 scholarly source that discusses the short story you chose for this assignment. Share the author, title, and publication of the article you chose. Write a short summary of the main idea of the scholarly article. How does this article align with your thoughts on the theme of the short story you chose?
Paragraph 4: Find 1 additional scholarly source from the University Library that discusses the short story you chose. Again, share the author, title, and publication of the article you chose and write a short summary of the main idea of the scholarly article. Explain how this article supports or detracts from your original thoughts on the story.
At the end of your assignment, in MLA format, share the Works Cited information for the short story and 2 articles you located. (Note: Students who are not enrolled in the BA in English program may use APA formatting without penalty.)
