ASSIGNMENT # 1: Using the materials in this week’s module for guidance, generate an empirical research question about one of the following behaviors or psychological characteristics:
long-distance running
getting tattooed
social anxiety
For example, if you choose long-distance running, develop just one question about long-distance running.
Also, you are merely creating the research question. You are not answering the question!
Step 2: Evaluate your questions
Then, evaluate your research question in terms of its interestingness based on the criteria discussed in Chapter 2 of the textbook. Aim to wrtie 2-3 sentences for each criterion (your evaluation should be about 6-9 sentences, then). Be sure you are using your own words, but make it clear you have completed the readings and make sure your responses are based on what we learned in the chapter.
Don’t forget, when evaluating your questions for interestingness, you will use the following criteria:
Is the answer in doubt? (Please state why you believe the answer is in doubt. You absolutely must use the book when addressing this criterion.)
Does the question fill a gap in the research literature? (Use your best judgment to answer this question, after you do a quick search on google and check the databases for research related to your question. Describe why you think there is a gap, based on this quick research)
Does the answer have important practical implications? (If we could answer your research question, how could the answer help us in the real world? Answer this question very specifically!)
Please format your assignment like this:
Topic: Long Distance Running
Question:
[Insert question here]
Evaluation:
This question is interesting for the following reasons. First, the answer is in doubt because [Insert reasons why you think the answer is in doubt. What are some reasons you might expect two different answers?] The question also fills a gap in the research literature because [Insert reasons why you believe there is a gap in the research literature here, based on the brief research you completed]. Finally, this question does have practical implications because [Insert practical implications of answers that might be found based on your question. How would society benefits from the results of your research on this question?]
ASSIGNMENT #2 :
Intuitive Beliefs
As we learned in the readings this week, humans have many ways to explain phenomena in the world. The collective, intuitive beliefs we have about human mental processes and behavior are called folk psychology. Sometimes, we are pretty accurate about the reasons why people think and act the way we do. But….we are also wrong. A lot.
Here’s a Bill brother story! My dad and step-mom are very obsessed with blaming sugar on my kids’ wild behavior. Every time one of the boys acts up in some way, they alwaaaaaaays blame it on sugar! They basically look for confirmation of their beliefs and only notice the times these two variables are present at the same time (i.e. sugar and the undesired behavior). My kids act up all the time, even when they don’t have sugar, haha. I mean, parenting practices, inborn personality traits, sibling dynamics, and boredom are also associated with a child’s behavior. I wonder why that gets ignored and the sugar is all they focus on?
Initial Post
Now, let’s practice investigating intuitive beliefs. For the intuitive belief about human behavior provided below, list three reasons that it might be true and three reasons that it might not be true. This will be the only time in this course when I will specifically ask you to not research or support your claims with the readings. Just…give your reasons based on what you know or have heard about these common beliefs.
Replies to Peers
Then, when you reply to at least 2 of your peers, comment specifically on the reasons they provided as to why the belief might or might not be true. Use these questions to guide your responses:
In 2-3 sentences, please say why you do or do not agree with their reasons?
In 2-3 sentences, please describe what confirmation bias plays in the beliefs your peers have explored? (You must address confirmation bias and demonstrate a clear understanding of the concept in both replies to earn full credit)

Intuitive Belief: Studying is most effective when it is always done in the same location.
Reasons why it might be true:
[Insert Reason 1]
[Insert Reason 2]
[Insert Reason 3]
Reasons why it might not be true:
[Insert Reason 1]
[Insert Reason 2]
[Insert Reason 3]
Final Note
Please be sure to review the discussion rubric before completing this assignment, paying special attention to the “replies” section. Many students forget to clearly define and integrate the ways in which confirmation bias play a role in intuitive beliefs.
