Assignement description:
State what the word “utopia” means in the Greek and what it has come to mean in modern language. Cite at least one specific aspect of Utopian society to say whether the Utopian ideal of moral and political right and wrong is utilitarian in nature. On the utilitarian view one ought to maximize the overall good — that is, consider the good of others as well as one’s own good. Relatedly, you may want to think of the role of technology. Do you think technology increases the polarization rather than promising a better future for all? Explain why.

Notes:
A response essay should be 550 words minimum. Prompts are assigned to serve two purposes. First, they will address key issues and important points in the readings. Second, they will be designated to develop particular critical thinking and writing skills students that will be expected to utilize in the argumentative essay.
We do not need to do external research for this assignment or any assignments for this class.
We talked about the meaning of Utopia in Module 4, and we talked a little about utilitarianism in Module 4 as well. In a nutshell, utilitarianism means the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Therefore, the prompt asks about whether technology promises a better society for ALL. “Polarization” in this context means the difference between the rich and the poor, the gap between between people who have more power and who have less or little, etc. There are three threads in the prompt: 1. utopia; 2. utilitarianism; 3. technology. We need to put these threads together and come up with a thesis. Essentially, the prompt is asking whether technology makes societies better for all. Again, there is no right or wrong answer as long as long one is able to provide reasoning with textual evidences. We need to locate specific places from both readings to support the argument.
I am not too fussy about citation styles as some articles are webpages. One could cite the Dyson lecture this way:
Dyson, Freeman. “Technology and Social Justice.” 1997.
